Planning a vacation to the Big Island of Hawaii can be daunting, especially if you want to avoid the crowds and save money on your trip. Luckily, we're here to help! This blog post will provide a brief synopsis of the best months of the year to visit the Big Island to help you find some good deals on airline tickets, accommodations, and activities.
In general, tourism on the Big Island goes through two different seasons, a low and a high season, as do most tourist destinations. The seasons can be defined as the following:
High Season: Increase in the number of travelers to the Big Island = increased rates on flights, accommodations, and activities.
Low season: Decrease in the number of travelers to the Big Island = cheaper rates on flights, accommodations, and activities.
If you want to avoid the crowds and save money, your goal will be to target the low season. When we say low season for Hawaii, the prices are lower than usual. However, realize that Hawaii does not experience a true low season like most other tourist destinations because the weather is gorgeous year-round.
The High Season on the Big Island
The Big Island has two different High seasons; one in the winter and one in the summer. Mid-December to mid-March is when most people from the mainland United States travel to Hawaii for a vacation to escape the winter. The second part of the high season on the Big Island is from mid-June to the end of August as school gets out and families take their summer vacations.
Additionally, the Big Island experiences a spike in tourism during the last week of April, known as "Golden Week," Many people from Japan come to visit during this time.
Major holidays, like Thanksgiving and Christmas, also bring a plethora of tourists to the Island and the higher rates along with them.
Weather-wise, the high season months are generally the drier months on the Big Island. The trade winds help keep the humidity at bay, and there is less rain. However, the days are shorter during the winter months, which is a bonus of finding time to visit during the low season.
The Low Season on the Big Island
The low season is your target if you want to find cheaper rates and avoid crowds. The low season occurs during two different timeframes on the Big Island: mid-March to June and September to mid-December.
Weather-wise, the low season months are generally wetter months on the Big Island. The trade winds are not as strong, and the humidity can be higher. However, even during the wetter months, it generally only rains for a short period each day (don't fret if you see rain in the forecast during your vacation week!). Plus, the green vegetation and waterfalls are spectacular during the wetter months!
